MY "TRIBUTE TO BHEKI MSELEKU" BAND
In November 2014, i revisited the compositions of my hero, friend and musical compadre the late great Bheki Mseleku (1955-2008). A major influence on me when i was just discovering jazz as a teenager in the 1990's, we ended up playing extensively together in duo, quartet and quintet formations throughout the last 3 years of his life. I would transcribe his new compositions for him as well as his recorded classics. This group revisits these pieces, arranged by myself for a large group of some of my favourite players on the scene today, (figuring the best way to do justice to a larger-than-life pianist like Bheki would be to do a large scale treatment of the tunes!). This will be an ongoing project, but here are the results from our inaugural outing! Also featured are Alex Garnett (saxes) James Allsop (baritone sax/ Bass clarinet) Steve Fishwick (trumpet/flugelhorn) Barnaby Dickinson (trombone) Ross Stanley (piano/organ) Dave Whtiford (bass) Tim Giles (drums).
